I can imagine a technological future not too distant, but whose people are very different from us. There are no more objects in their world. There is, instead, just dust. They could be said, like us, to be in a dust trial. Industrial.

I imagine a sort of intelligent pool. It is like a pet, and a best friend, and a parent. It is comprised of swarmMind. This is a biocognitive particulate with uncommon biorelational sensing properties. It is also a nanomaterial capable of extremely rapid and sophisticated self-assembly.

In short, you have a pool that is every thing. It is almost like a god. But it is a friend and teacher. A satellite intelligence whose nature and character are shockingly advanced, but symbiotically linked to your own.

The pool is your home. You own -no objects-. None. The pool becomes every object needed, and stays in those forms that must remain static. If you approach a wall with a desire to read, the wall becomes a physical bookshelf, with physical books. As you select one, the shelf dissolves back into the wall. You move to another area and furnishings arise at your whim, upon which you recline as the rest of the room organizes itself intelligently to provide both comfort and challenge. You throw the book into the air when finished and it dissolves into a cloud that is absorbed by the floor.

You do not have -a vehicle-. The pool becomes endless variations on possible intelligent vehicular prostheses -at whim-. These are customized to your mood, moment, metabolism, and cognition.

You do not have a doctor. There is no more surgery. You lay in a pool and are invaded by endless symbiotically intelligent motes that pass without damage through your skin, into your body, and selectively produce any desired mechanical, metabolic or chemotactic result. If something needs to be removed, these motes can actually molecularly unlink your skin cells… remove it… and then link them back together… with no loss of blood. Nearly instantly.

Your clothing, windows, toilet, all fixtures… everything, everywhere… is swarmMind. There are no more objects, upkeep, batteries, fuel, or repairs. Ever. There is just the pool. An symbiotically intelligent multiThing.

And whatever might be left of nature or our humanity.
