“If you could be anything, what would you be?

It’s such a hard question. The best answer is that my life is the pursuit of this question in body rather than thought alone. But as a question, some senses of my answer rise to mind. I would be a voice to the silenced. Success to the failed. Life to the condemned. I would be rescue to those whose hope had long ago languished, then faltered, then died. I would be adoration to the despised. Food to the starving, healing to the wounded and health to the diseased. Adoption to the rejected. And so, I do not know what I would be, for what unifies all these things and the many more I know I must become but cannot say? Perhaps it is this: I would be something so general that it must be intimately and beautifully involved in every specificity, every moment, place, and being. With beauty, with nobility that is true, with wonder, joy, discovery, growth, and … promise. May I find some way to be thus.”
