“The question isn’t whether Ms. Jolie was courageous or even intelligent. The question is this: was she empowered to reasonably understand the statistical probabilities she claims her decision was driven by? The answer appears to be: absolutely not. If she had her breasts removed based on fear or misunderstanding, that is a tragedy we must insure does not become -an example- for women to view as courageous or correct.
There is another, less savory possibility, which is that, either consciously or subconsciously she may have wanted a personal and/or public justification for a private decision involving cosmetic breast surgery. She may have weighed the risks, combined those with her unstated desire, and made a personal decision appropriate for her.
In this case, however, she has lied, and mislead women into thinking that her decision was based on medical necessity and thoughtful consideration. If that is what has happened we must insure that the public be made aware of the discrepancy between her explanation and her actions. If they are not the result of actual medical necessity then Ms. Jolie’s explanation must be shown to be facetious.
Simply stated, women must not be openly mislead on issues of basic breast health and appropriate medical advice and response. Especially by their role-models.”
