“One of the reasons that I believe we are extremely confused about the entire panoply of phenomenon associated with UFOs is simple: I believe we are only seeing a minute and obscure representation of the actual phenomenon. And I think it is, or actually must be, far more bizarre than our models. We are seeing ‘falling leaves’ but, never having seen or imagined a tree, we keep ascribing identities to them from our own knowledge frameworks.

The problem is, these objects are not from within our frameworks at all. We are mistaken to believe our categories can subsume them. It is the iceberg effect, transferred from size to identity and meaning: we are seeing only the smallest hint of the actual character and identity of these phenomenon, and then, prior to actually exploring it, we are quick to pack it off into models of people from other planets or dimensions. I think that view is worth examining, but most likely naive and premature.

The phenomenon at issue include an extremely broad range of effects and reports. I am not even certain that the ‘visitors from another world/place/time’ evaluation is correct for even one of those events, but I do consider it possible. What I am relatively certain of is this: we are going to have to really deeply and creatively explore these matters before we will have much of a shot at placing them in their correct context, let alone understanding their significance.”
