The participant suggests possible roles through signalling. And, at the same time, the participant is the result of response to such signals. We call one another into being, subtly suggesting and traversing roles together and apart. Even places are thus, and are ‘sensitive’ to our signals in a way at least analogous to our sensitivity to the suggestions of roles for ourselves that we derive from intimacy with them.
