A god used to be an experience of direct relation with liquid identity. This happens to be a regular occurrence in dreaming. But in waking life, suddenly, one would find oneself involved not with identities, but with -something being expressed through identities-. A superposition of identity. This was an experience of god, and it was usually momentary, sudden, inexplicable. Like being hit by lightning. Only after long exposure to this did it occur to anyone to preserve the experience, concretize it as a specific identity, worship it, and use it as a projection of authority in the service of amplifying the apparent power, knowledge or authority of some specific human collective. You can imagine a group of people naming a bolt of lightning, drawing it, always representing it in that form and location, dressing it up with qualities, using it as an emblem of divine favor and authority, and speaking ex cathedra as the bolt itself to the world. Now compare that to the raw experience of lightning and how different it is in every time and moment and person… how liquid, how immediate, and how instantly it disappears tracelessly…
