“The humans are possessed by their rabid drive to possess, and so they completely misunderstand the soul. It is as if a leaf cannot understand how it can belong to a tree and so mistakes its tremendous altitude for some accomplishment or reward for its meritorious form or ability. Such hubris is the starkest form of idiocy. In reality, a soul is a vast association of beings throughout time and place. A river of lives and mind, dreaming and tragedy, heroism and loss. Each being is like a tributary of this transcendental river as it briefly ‘leaks’ into time, form, space, and relation. Myriads of beings are involved in your soul; animals and plants, insects and germs. When you see nature and feel awe, you are sensing the impossible depth and promise of your own soul. The living beings and places of Earth are part of the river from which you emerge and upon which your every moment of consciousness intimately depends. The soul is not a possession; it is an association — an intimacy… a relation. If there is some form of possession, your soul possesses you, not the other way around.”
