The process of learning can be seen as a rhythmic process of movement through the complimentary pairs of exploration and internalization. This is like breathing in the sense that we emerge and explore, and then retract and reflect — taking downtime to internalize and integrate models, challenges, discoveries, threats, and opportunities. There is a natural rhythm to this process, unique to each being and situation; a tempo to the cycles of emergence into novelty, exploration, and retraction — back toward safety and familiarity. This is clear even in the structure of our cycles of waking and sleeping. While awake we may tend to think. While asleep, we rest — and dream.
