It is only rarely that the character of either the land or the water is untenable for the human involved with them; however, the place where they meet is often fraught with peril. The transition zone is unpredictable, stormy, momentous… thunders and rushings obtain there. Mammoth forces push and pull at matter.

And so it is with consciousness. It is neither waking nor dreaming that are ordinarily particularly rough; but the place where they meet is definitely strange and fascinating. Similar forces are at play, but they are psychic, rather than physical, and emotional rather than reflective.

We pass back and forth across this zone of transition nightly, and, sometimes, even during waking consciousness… at others, we come halfway across, as in lucid dreaming. In others still, something truly astonishing happens, and the (some portion of) dreaming faculties are available to our waking consciousness. Delusion is most readily mistaken for this latter experience, and, indeed, often masquerades as it.
