Dreaming is (at least in part) the experience that results from the process of memory being informed (in the sense of enstructured)… in new and more sophisticated ways.
In this sense, dreaming becomes the ‘wings’ with which memory ‘flies’ — that is, to hypercreatively endow entirely new modes of memory, each comprising new ways of expressing experience, apprehension and perspective within consciousness.
Dreaming prepares us to have new kinds of experiences made conscious, and thus, over time, can be understood to represent something analogous to the heartbeat… of the development of consciousness…
I suspect that it will be some time before this is commonly understood, but even contemplating this attentively this will immediately affect your dreaming experience… in fascinating ways. I do not think this is ordinarily made conscious knowledge, and the admission of this idea into consciousness is a significant developmental event. There are bound to be repercussions.
Of course, this means that lucid dreaming is, effectively, the high-performance version. It apparently assembles not only paradigms of memory for ordinary consciousness… but also for metapositions of consciousness…
… the well is deep indeed. How strange to see the stars below us. They speak? Yet no sound emerges from the water.
It ripples gently, shimmering.
