The rod we hold when actually writing is metaphorically potent, and stands in part for that with which we divide, distinguish, measure, erase or authorize. The art of writing with rods is exceptionally old, and the uses of such rods older still. The coordination of the writing hand, the strokes, everything about writing is personal and intimate. The activity of typing is simply not the same thing at all, powerful and efficient though it is.
