It’s difficult to understand the relationship between intelligence and imagination… but the necessities of formal intelligence require freezing (and defending) what would otherwise be mere ‘states of imagination’ — this is somewhat analogous to trying to ‘stop and defend’ certain states of a waterfall… so it’s necessary, and insane, this project — yet we cannot abandon our explorations of it. We must come to understand this relationship and its dangers and opportunities much more clearly… if we are to survive it.
