Our first exposures to the complex rhythms and cadences of sophisticated language came only rarely through the transport of our parents’ speech. It was instead, the storytelling… the bedtime story, the orator on tape or film… it was here we were first exposed the parahypnotic features of common language, and if we developed these skills to any reasonable degree… we developed them primarily from these sources.
