“I found the word Χρυσαλλίς/chrysalis. as an epithet for Isis used in the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods here in Epidavros! She is often called The Golden One but I love the added rebirth/metamorphosis aspects of the specific word chrysalis – and the plain tiger butterfly (Danaus chrysippus), like Isis migrates from Africa to Greece, the butterfly has golden flecks on its chrysalis (which is why the Greeks called the chrysalis the chrysalis in the first place (golden sheath).
Also the plain tiger lays eggs and feeds almost exclusively on plants in the Asclepias genus! These plants are so called because they were used for medicinal purposes in ancient times.
If the ancient Egyptian word for chrysalis is the same as egg (swHt) which is a determinative used in her hieroglyph name block – it would be a nice connection.
I was thinking about Isis and her role in the invention of mummification and embalming which could be seen as a chrysalis preparing the human form for metamorphosis into the next life.
The plain tiger is depicted in the Theban tomb of Nebamun and is thought to be the oldest painting of a butterfly ever found, perhaps connects to the soul, as psyche does in butterfly form.”
