Eheh, we had a 7.0 quake off the shore of Humboldt… and are now under a Tsunami warning, which is kind of hilarious because the danger map shows all of San Francisco… so, you know, we might need diving gear here shortly. Strangely, last night I was imagining a situation where the oxygen disappeared, and was thinking about writing a story in which a man has enough oxygen for a short time, but realizes that when it runs out… so does his lifespan. In the late 90’s there was a situation in which a ship carrying a vast quantity (more than 100 tons) of anhydrous ammonia lost control of its steerage as it was approaching the Golden Gate bridge. Had it crashed and taken on water, the resulting explosion would, I suspect, have suddenly deprived an area of at least 25 miles in diameter of all breathable oxygen… for some period of time.
