“Anything which can be pointed to, named or spoken of is an object, the self is not an object, it is that which cannot be objectified, the subject. All object are but names and forms superimposed on the subject by the ignorance of the mind. This superimposition is not an actual appearance of the subject as object, it is only the mind mistaking the subject for an object.

The rope does not actually appear as a snake, it is only ever a rope, the snake appearance is in the mind. There is nothing harmful about the ability to see the rope as a snake, in fact it is most necessary for play. There is a great joy in pretending the rope is a snake and this pretending is an enactment of the same superimposition. However to forget that one is pretending turns the game into a dire one in which certain outcomes must be avoided at all costs. This is where we find ourselves.”
