I am seeing more and more claims in the media that begin or end with “There’s no evidence that (append some concern or assertion about something here)”. But absence of evidence != evidence of absence. This is a rhetorical error. I discuss this extremely disturbing trend, and related concerns about science, medicine, and the problems that arise when problems, causes and solutions tend to be ‘pre-framed’ in ways that produce deceptive results.

In the latter part of the video, I explore ‘the problem with statistics’ and how probabilistic models (and generalizations) while a reasonable heuristic for cohorts, often fail miserably when applied to actual individuals.
