Yesterday evening I was reading Tristan Gooley’s ‘The Lost Art of Reading Nature’. In an early chapter he describes a scene at night, where a sinkhole swallows a young boy and his brother tries in vain to rescue him. He mentions that people with geological understanding will think: ‘Limestone’.
After reading this, I thought: Well, there are some other causes. A leaking water main or sewer pipe could eat away at the soil around it over time. Then: Well, this doesn’t happen much around here.
I went for a walk up the street.
Half a block from my house, I saw the road along my path was blocked off for some reason. As I walked up the road…
… I saw there was a gigantic sinkhole some 30 feet across. Right in the middle… of my own street.
Coincidence much?
