Survival is a goal that is only interesting within a crisis. In ordinary, day-to-day existence, survival becomes a tedium of unfulfilled moments strung together by nothing worth remembering.
Adventure, the opportunity to enact excellence and virtue… deep discovery… wonder… awe… reverence…
These words point toward something at least as fundamental to our humanity as survival. And survival becomes a tragedy in a context where there is neither challenge nor adventure.
