Funny that we build boxes for bees. If I were developing hives, I’d first try to understand the range of features that attract scouts. And I’d look at successful, healthy hives. I suspect that ‘regularity’ for all its seeming utility, isn’t healthy or preferable.
A living tree gives a »lot more insulation against weather than a box. But I imagine building hives that were organically shaped inside, each one somewhat unique… yet conserving the features that bees themselves value… rather than the ‘more convenient’ boxes.
And frankly, I’d do something similar with houses, too.
