When we see examples of ‘extreme performance’ in human beings, what we are seeing is actually less than ordinary. In other words, we are seeing examples of people who have linked their interior prodigy (their ‘genius’) with a developmental path or paths. So although it ‘seems impossible’ (to us) to, for example, hold one’s breath for 20 minutes — this is actually less than our potential… not more. It looks extreme because most of our actual faculties and potentials are profoundly inhibited (if not functionally amputated) by the social, conceptual and linguistic environment we develop within.
These structured ‘traditions’ of knowledge and identity are the analog of light pollution in the night sky — the ‘loud electronic light’ of modern culture and common thought overwhelms the delicate brightness of the stars we carry within. And then, over time, we forget them.
But yet they shine, and shall emerge from obscurity whenever and wherever we strive… together… to remember…
The big secret is this: each one of us is far more than merely human, but most of us require ‘unusual’ circumstances in order to discover this and develop the myriad faculties, senses… and roles… that are our birthright.
