The famous Italian free diver, Enzo Maiorca (depicted in the Luc Besson film (The Big Blue)), was diving in the warm sea of Syracuse and talking to his daughter Rossana, who was on the boat.

In the water and ready to dive, he felt something hitting his back slightly. He turned around and saw a dolphin. He then realized that he didn’t want to play, but to express something.

The animal dove and Enzo followed him.

About 12 meters deep, trapped in an abandoned net, there was another dolphin.

Maiorca immediately asked his daughter to get her diving knives and join him. In a few minutes the two managed to free the dolphin that, at the limit of its energy, managed to emerge by emitting a what Maiorca described as an ′almost human cry′.

A dolphin can hold its breath under water for up to 10 minutes, then it drowns.

The freed dolphin, still stunned, was guided to the surface by Enzo, Rossana and the other dolphin. It blew foam and blood: then gave birth.

The male circled them and, ‘standing’ in front of Enzo, touched his cheek (as if it were a kiss), in a gesture of gratitude… and they swam away.

Enzo Maiorca concluded his speech by saying: “Until humans learn to respect and dialogue with the animal world, we will never know our true role on this Earth”.
