“When a society that depends upon a vast, shockingly layered array of lethal fictions for survival is directly faced with this fact, there are a very small number of likely outcomes. If there was ever any historical instance of a nation that ‘came to their senses’ when this happened, I have never heard of it.

Generally, the first thing that happens is that they double down on the lies that were the origins of the cascading catastrophes they must face as a direct result of their egregious misconduct. Along with this, the poor are generally scapegoated (or simply enslaved) and profiteers briefly engage in various kinds of feeding frenzies. This tends to rapidly escalate the crises as well as severely exacerbate the ensuing consequences.

Right now, on Earth, there are nearly no other kinds of societies for a simple reason: we failed to establish any. But the web of fictions upon which our modern societies depend, and from which their fabric was woven… is irrevocably torn.

Although ‘we’ do not yet really exist (since we never formed an actually integrated group): the vast majority of modern persons will either become fodder for a brief escalation of catastrophes arising from greed and ‘business as usual’…

…or they will establish societies worthy of our humanity… and capable of enacting something resembling both ethical and environmental intelligence.

Unfortunately, this latter option is profoundly unlikely at the scale of nations or the world… yet it is almost instantly accessible to small groups of skillful and intelligent persons without regard to their apparent wealth or social class.”
