It’s imperative that we learn to place our awareness ‘above’ the concepts, ‘norms’, models, myths and ‘statistics’ that too often occupy a central position in our cognitive activity and internal ‘authorization’ behavior.

In this video I explore these and related topics.

“Tonight I had a hankering for something sweet I so swung by the local Crackmart. Really it’s called Quickmart, but its proximity to what is essentially a homeless park gives it its more accurate name. It, and the park, exist in an area burgeoning with gentrification, and the Crackmart now also sits across the street from a chocolate shop with $9 individual truffles and a wellness center stocked with singing bowls and yoga passes. Anyway, I pulled up and saw a person sitting on the stoop of the store, shrouded in a shiny aluminum blanket and surrounded by boxes of feminine napkins, emphatically talking to herself while scribbling something furiously, undaunted by the glaring headlights of the monster truck in front of her, yet staring into them. She looked familiar to me from the neighborhood, perhaps, and my heart quickly broke. Upon greeting the cashier, a friendly, young Latino man, I asked him if that person ever gets any help. He looked outside and said, “Oh, that black lady? She’s fine.” “She’s mentally ill and I’m worried about her,” I said. “She’s not mentally ill, she’s fine,” he said. “She’s talking to herself, ” I replied, incredulously. He said, “Think about it. What would you do, if you were sitting out there by yourself? Wouldn’t you do the same thing?” His other customer agreed wholeheartedly with this logic, and to be honest it kind of made sense to me, too, at the time. And then we all kind of laughed and it didn’t all seem so terrible anymore. It was nice that he didn’t demonize the woman or her illness, and saw her a rational human being. On the other hand, if you don’t see a problem, then you’ll do nothing to fix it? Maybe it isn’t a problem? Crazy wisdom? I got chocolate milk, for those wondering.”
