“I remember reading a book written in the 40’s or 50’s — in it, the author suggested that humans might be very confused about light. He posited an event where we met another species — a spacefaring and intelligent species a bit like ourselves (an idea that I and many science fiction authors have always found to be fertile in terms of generating novel perspectives on human activity). The author invites us to imagine how people who were intelligent, a bit like us, but not human, would understand something pivotal.
Light, for example. Or time.
They might even have a model that unifies them, which, to my mind, is not entirely unlikely.”
