“The problem with our supercultures and their commercial insanity is that when they learn that something is about to become scarce, is being obliterated, or is in danger of extinction… the people and organizations in power rush to turn the remaining instances of life, beauty or the future… into commodities.
Scarcity = value.
So when you tell them the Amazon Rainforest or the Soil or Atmosphere or Oceans are precious… they will simply rush to ‘get the remaining money’ before the cash-machine dies.
An example is tuna. Now that tuna is becoming rare, the few remaining schools are the penultimate commodity, with single fish selling for 3.1 million USD.
So you cannot save the ecologies by telling supercultures they are valuable or necessary because those institutions are not persons, they don’t have minds — they are incapable of ‘care’… they don’t thrive on futures or hope or sanity… but »murder, disguised as business.
And what they are murdering is not merely the future… but the entire »meaning and ethos of the history of life on Earth. It is not merely the future that is at risk… but the whole history of life’s struggles on our world.
This doesn’t mean there is no hope. It means that we need to rapidly invent approaches that replace the power of our existing supercultures to obliterate the biological futures of life on Earth. We need a new way of being human together… that can both outcompete and outperform the diseases that presently dominate our world in the guise of nations.”
