∞ We surveil ourselves and each other, ceaselessly. But from »what prefab perspectives and purposes? What happens when we notice and change those purposes?
What happens when we ignore this matter and allow fictional collectives to define, prescribe, and otherwise surreptitiously enforce false or lethal surveillance paradigms… like this one?
Let us examine some sources of the original term. And consider the necessity of repurposing our entire concept and understandings of surveillance which is, fundamentally, one of the roots of human consciousness, relation, intelligence and insight. If this root is severed or corrupted, catastrophe is the only possible result.
And when this is corrected?
Prodigy is the natural outcome. Understanding the relationship between surveillance, consciousness, potential and intelligence is absolutely crucial. Without these understandings, we shall be slaves of what thrives in their stead as our minds, in our cultures, and over life on Earth.
surveillance (n.)
1802, from French surveillance “oversight, supervision, a watch,” noun of action from surveiller “oversee, watch” (17c.), from sur- “over” (see sur- (1)) + veiller “to watch,” from Latin vigilare, from vigil “watchful” (see vigil). Seemingly a word that came to English from the Reign of Terror in France (“surveillance committees” were formed in every French municipality in March 1793 by order of the Convention to monitor the actions and movements of suspect persons, outsiders, and dissidents).
