“Men become capable of something resembling actual fatherhood at different ages. Some men never will. Obviously, the same is true of women and motherhood. Much of this process depends intimately upon the nature of the contexts and culture in which they develop and grow, or are punished and inhibited. Bluntly, our modern cultures are nightmares for our developmental needs and imperatives, and, largely, they are overtly toxic. The projections from media, advertising, and politics — not to mention law — are at once absurd and inhuman. This makes the idea that anyone who can progenerate or bear a child ‘is responsible for their well-being and development’ a lie.”
