Our modern ideas of hygiene — funded where not invented by corporations and marketing jargon — are and have long been explosively misfounded. The reality is simple: the commensal microbiota has to be developed and protected in early childhood and throughout our lives. This is a ‘personal ecology’ whose time scales for evolutionary competition and development are tiny… hours, days, weeks… because ‘time’ for bacterial populations in the billions is nothing like our ideas. So we have distributed array of ‘hyper-rapid’ internal evolutionary processes that depend upon food, and inoculation with healthy sources of new commensal bacteria. Could it be that ‘christening’ and ‘baptism’ actually involved direct respiratory and esophogeal exposure to bacteria? Could ‘the holy spirit’ be ‘the between’ of bacterial relations, which are happening in hyper-time and are highly distributive?
