If you have successfully adapted to your social environment, I suggest that the chances are high that you had to shut down most (at least half) of your intellectual, sensing, and relational capacities. There are a range of reasons why this is so, but many of these features of our human nature and ability lie outside the accepted mores of our modern cultures, and are usually hunted, taboo, or punished.

The problem is conveniently hidden beneath the veil of ignorance its emergence establishes. Once adaptation is accomplished, the chances that anyone might succeed in alerting you to the problem are slim; *the faculties you would ordinarily depend upon to understand the loss have been hobbled by its outcomes*.
