I think it is crucial to be pragmatic and effective. It is even more important to be true, and this somehow relates to beauty. If beauty is missing from my play another approach will almost surely improve the results. Beauty may be sensed as evidence of truth’s direction… a kind of changing magnetic north — and these sometimes subtle signals are important — unless and until beauty becomes the ‘goal’ in which case it undergoes polar inversion. The results? Travesty, monstrous masquerades, and terrifying caricatures, whose true effects are opposite their costumes.
