In any other generation, almost immediately, everyone would have noticed something obvious and crucial: facebook and g+ represent technologies vastly too powerful to be or remain in the hands of a corporation. In the same way nuclear power or radioactive materials are regulated, or some institutions are transmitted from privately managed to socially managed collectives in the interest of the public good, these technologies must be placed in the conservatorship of -actually intelligent- and humane forces capable of directing them for peace, human development, education, and wonder. To allow them to remain in the hands of corporate bodies would have been unthinkable. The fact that it is not should give us cause not only for alarm, but action.
