There are preachers and teachers. Preachers want to stand above you, teachers want to push you beyond them. Some teachers preach, and some preachers teach — but the famous are nearly always preachers, and they have an interest in maintaining (and widening) the gap between their apparent expertise, authority and power, and your role as supplicant, applicant, client, acolyte, and so on. There are preachers and there are teachers. Preachers put you in your place. Teachers push you beyond all places you have known. Let the right one in. And check who is passing the threshold -every time-, especially if they appear ‘trusted’ or ‘familiar’.
