“Rap is a peculiar thing. It is as if it takes the singing, and removes the melodic aspect, so that what is left, is the pulse of the rhythm, naked of music. The language uses this rhythm to accomplish various otherwise difficult or impossible emotional effects.

Nearly all of this seems to produce, at least in common culture, incredibly malefic and ignorant presentations of identity, meaning, relation, and culture. But, occasionally, and when this happens it is monumental, some genius takes the momentum of the discarded music and transforms that into a kind of deep poetic intelligence within the relationship -between- the music, the rhythm, the lyric, metaphor, and the listener. This person is a sage and a wonder, they are the ‘actual MC’ because, unlike their crotch-and-gun-grabbing counterparts, they are doing something more than f*cking you in the ear with the waves of their egoic seizures. These people are inventing a new way of having minds together, and what they are doing is so far outside the ability or understanding of their peers that they might as well be on another world sending signals into deep space for all the effect it has on the genre.”
