We have no idea what imagination is, in part, because it is what we have ideas with. Perhaps more surprisingly, it would be impossible to make anything coherent from sensory input without imagination. To imagine the loss of the imagination is to imagine the dissolution of mind into chaos. It may well be the capacity to filter, link, and interpret experience in ways that become transports of enstructuring for the brain, cognition and consciousness. In this role, the imagination would be the primary force responsible for the character of minds.
