I am sure it is hard to understand and harder to realize as direct experience, but our wild ancestors did not experience their minds as a possession. Moreover, their minds were not ‘located’ as we think ours are. Indeed, they experienced the world and its many inhabitants — and all of their character and activity — as their own mind. It was like a living book… which was divided in twain: the half within us married to the half without. Only together could any sense be made of the text.
