Dreams and play, deep learning, art and intimacy… each uniquely repair something which our common waking consciousness tends to strip away. This is, approximately, the infinite potential surrounding identity and relation the experience of which elicits wonder, fascination… inspiration and enthusiasm. They restore the unknown, the mysterious, the infinitely diverse, the impossible. They weave it back into the vast tapestry of knowledge, names, and identity that form the foundation of our minds, and insure that the estranged literality of the waking consciousness is not allowed to sustain its tyrannical reductions to manipulables which it may then feign mastery, if not creation, of. This activity of the waking mind is useful within its proper contexts, but when it escapes them it is wont to establish itself as the god of meaning, value, and identity. This is a catastrophe few will recover from, and it turns the mind into the shadow of a fictional machine.
