“The problem can be stated simply. We are an animal who is uniquely sensitive to the possibilities of roles. We are, in an evolutionary sense, role-players. This means that we will often rather fluidly adopt the likenesses of roles implied by the contexts we encounter. We are called into what will become of our animalian and human nature, in response to calls — from contexts, cultures, and the environment. Problematically, in our time, nearly all of the forces issuing calls, defining contexts, and taking advantage of this are predatory. Nature is one of the few contexts broad enough in possibility to endlessly call us toward deeper and more intelligent perfection. Unfortunately, the predatory forces we serve in her stead are aware of this, and want Nature converted to resources for their own disposal as rapidly as possible. See the problem?”
