As we marvel at the incredible powers of the chameleon to change its appearance so as to blend into the background against which it may be seen… we, ourselves, are doing the inward metaphor of this. We become, internally, reflections of the contexts ‘against and within which we are seen’. Thus it is that the living world teaches us about ourselves in ways no discussion can readily or fully accomplish. Each being and relationship there is a mirror in which we may discover ourselves; living constellations of metaphor and simile. Machines and ideas can never become this. What we will see reflected in them is function alone, and should we take on that likeness internally… it will destroy us and all we have held sacred and beautiful. The world is a living library of endless opportunities to learn and embody and extend our humanity. Unless we make some other choice.
