The peculiar feature of certain specific aspects of the internet is that it is possible to meet and become intimate with a wide range of distant persons who, otherwise, would remain anonymous digits in an estranged accounting. But what I find interesting about this, about being involved in it, directly, is that not only are new forms of relationship arising, but anciently evolved and long conserved abilities which previously had no context to call them into awakening are emerging. New ways of knowing, sensing, feeling, and understanding. New ways of being and becoming human together. In a very real sense, the internet is an explosion happening in and around the modern cogniscium, and its effects are far broader than our capacity to apprehend them. This doesn’t make me excited about technology so much as it fascinates me to watch these processes and attempt to trace out their implications for our current moment, our history, and our future.
