All around us, there is a second human language. A nearly universal language, that has little or nothing to do with words, and speaks more clearly. The language of faces. Until very recently, I had no idea how incredibly important or fundamental this language was. One of the things I am really enjoying about learning to read faces, and, specifically — to read lies, deceit, contempt, hatred, and evasion — is not so much that I -really- pay attention to other people’s faces and sense their conflicts more easily… it is that I can discover my -own- conflicts, unspoken feelings, and deceits, by simply observing my own facial expressions, speech, and ‘tell gestures’ while I am communicating. That process is priceless and astonishing. It always turns out that the great detective’s most fundamental case… is the great detective’s case.
