Underneath the verbal content in ordinary human to human speech events, there is a second ‘language’ (often more than one) operating. I speak here of the ‘occult language’ of intention; that is, the intentions that shape and embellish these acts. It is an astonishing thing to become or remain aware of. Ordinarily it is a relatively simple matter to lie with words; but forging the footprints left by the intentions that shape and deliver utterances is an entirely other order of sophistication.
