The mode of unity in the universe is becoming furiously stranger at an increasing rate. Although it is one, it is not one in the sensible way a stone is one. It is many ways of becoming unity at once. More specifically, it is many ways of inventing ways of becoming unity in distinction. This is an exceptionally interesting game for everything to have selected. But it is far weirder than anything ordinarily sensible to the imagination.
Unity and distinction form a polarity, which is unified and inclusive, rather than a duality which presents distinct opposites, so in our case, distinction is a way of somewhat paradoxically ‘gardening’ the character and content— the meaning — of unity. Let us have some example.
If one imagines that all moments, beings, places and situations (in all of time) are ceaselessly collapsing to a speck (perfect unity) and then expanding to physical and temporal distinction again in a cycle that ascends in velocity with each iteration we may begin to approach the general shape of such weirdness.
In such a model, the universe is strobing at some absurdly advanced (and advancing) rate of speed, between unity and distinction. As with a strobe light flashing at such a rate, we only detect the on position. Everything appears distinct all of the time — yet it could actually be unified more of the time than it is distinct and we would remain largely or completely oblivious to this.
This model implies that the mode of unity in the universe is a learning activity of ever-more astonishing sophistication. During the unity phase of the strobe, all memory is shared (in the speck), and then redistributed to all beings, places, moments, situations, etc… in all of time. The capacities of such a method are limitless. And though this crude model may seem impossible, I feel convinced that the actual modes of unity in the universe are far stranger and more wonderful than this provocative sketch.
