There exist an array of mind-skills analogous to pathfinding, and these lead to yet others which perhaps border on prodigy. Since they are rarely taught (some of their catalysts are taught), and even more rarely developed in those around us, we do not ordinarily have the opportunity to discover or train them. Perhaps more troubling, many of our common habits and technologies inhibit their development by providing representational substitutes. When writing and reading became a common substitute for the arts of memory we lost contact with a fundamental array of faculties whose intrinsic value cannot be overstated. And so, as our technologies have multiplied and proceeded, we have become the vessels of conservation of many lost capacities; we are filled with the dusty treasures of our human heritage — it simply remains for us to find a reason to discover, explore, and reactivate them together.
