In the city, some of our opportunities to see are removed or inhibited. Others are expanded. One rapidly learns to see where one otherwise cannot by paying close attention to reflections. There is so much glass, and reflections represent access to unusual visual opportunities such as seeing around a corner one is approaching.
I am reminded in a sense of language as serving a somewhat similar purpose in relation to identity and meaning — giving us access to opportunities for apprehending qualities, ideas and relationships which would otherwise be impossible. But also as an inhibitor of some aspects of apprehension, much like the overwrought structure of cities.
