I will never believe that -a mechanism- comprises an intelligence. The relational web that is the foundation of organismal existence cannot be emulated or discarded, and somehow result in intelligence.
For me, intelligence is a quality only living beings and gestalts can reasonably evince, and thus we -=must have another term=- for the mechanical manipulation of data.
I do, however, believe that humans are ridiculously self-aggrandizing enough to re-define intelligence so that machines can qualify. This is effectively like redefining humanity so that cartoons … or corporations… can qualify as persons. This represents a form of techno-linguistic pornography that establishes and celebrates an exceptionally dangerous and slippery slope, and it leads to places were living beings will be drawn directly into survival competitions with malignantly aggressive abstractions wrought of words and product-objects.
It’s a place I’d like to see us avoid visiting, preferably forever.
