Many suppose that the first steps on the spiritual path require belief. This is a bit confusing, because what is actually required is doubt. Acquiring beliefs from common culture (and esoteric sub-cultures) is largely like acquiring diseases from sexual activity. If you can avoid these acquisitions, while maintaining your own enthusiasm and curiosity… that, to me, looks like ‘the spiritual path’ — and doubt is a fierce ally in this process.
