“Whenever we allow previously-learned biases to blindly determine our reactions to what is occurring presently in our socio-ecological environment, we are forfeiting our ability to respond genuinely, our response-ability. I do this constantly, like a skittish mallard flying away at the first sign of anything resembling a known predator. I would rather model my behavior on the corvids, who maintain a cautious and critical distance while scrutinizing every situation and all players for their unique characteristics. This latter approach is that of the successful opportunist and learner, qualities I yearn to embody. Thus, I am resolving that, from now on, I will not allow my biases to comprise convenient and impenetrable walls to various forms of relationality, but will instead open myself to the all opportunities that are present.” — Ryan HeavyHead
