When I say ‘we call each other into being’, I speak of a truly profound aspect of our existence, which is easily overlooked. We invoke unique instances of possible selves in each other, constantly. Each person we know, becomes, for us, a new way of exploring and understanding the world of experience and relation. When we gain a friend, we gain a new instance of possible selfhood, as well as actual instances of becoming ourselves which would be otherwise unavailable. And when we lose contact with someone we love, it is, indeed, a kind of death — for we lose the one who previously was a way of being to us… a way of seeing, relating, and mutually arising. This matter is endlessly deep, and astonishing to experience and contemplate.
