Time was, there were three important ‘holes’ in the home. The entrance door, the fireplace, and the door to the underworld. This wasn’t a toilet or sewer opening, but a hole between the entrance door and the fireplace. It was understood and used as a door to the (lower) place of unity. A place where powerful animal and plant spirits lived, spoke, and interacted with us. Everyone had one.
